Don + Helen never cease to amaze us. These two are the type of photographers who are always pushing their creativity. They seem to re-invent themselves constantly. So, when we asked them to test the new Forged FXS Presets specially designed for Fuji cameras, we knew they would create something interesting. But we were not ready for them to blow our mind!
Tribe Collective: What gear you did you use for this session?
Don + Helen: We used a Fujifilm Xpro2, a Fujifilm XT2, Fujinon 16mm 1.4, Fujinon 23mm 1.4.
TC: Any interesting details or challenges you faced during the session?
DH: We shot at two different location. The first one was Agaete, a town in the north of the island where we live (Canary Island). The second location was Hacienda del Buen Suceso. It’s one of the oldest banana plantations on the island of Gran Canary. The Canary Islands are located in the middle of Atlantic Ocean beside Morocco and the Sahara desert but politically belongs to Spain.
The weather was interesting too. It was hailing and raining and sunny and windy and hailing again and sunny again... It was a crazy day and we had a lot of very wet gear. Hahaha!
TC: What was the inspiration for this shoot?
DH: The inspiration behind that shoot was definitely love! And bananas are a mind-blowing inspiration! Hahaha! For real, we are inspired by our small island, its beauty, its contrasts of landscapes and weather and the love between the couple (Alba+Will).
TC: What does your post-production process look like?
DH: Wow! We never thought about how it would look like to tell you the truth. When we edit our images, we always go for how does a certain tone makes us feel. The darkness, the color and light when we take our images are emotional triggers. And when we edit them, we want that emotion to be more obvious or more powerful rather than muting it. The Forged FXS presets by Tribe Red Leaf definitely brings out the best in our work.
TC: How has your photography style evolved over time?
DH: We haven't thought about style when we began in photography... still we haven't thought about until this day. We capture images because we feel like a certain frame or subject wants to tell us something that is worth telling to others. We are passionate about people, who they are, what they have gone through, and how can we help them with anything... that is the main purpose that drives us creatively.
Over time, life experiences teach you so many things and that accumulated knowledge and emotions definitely can shape your vision, your outlook on life and your purpose... your "why"! Our why... is the north of our compass and that is what we follow.
TC: What are your favourite tools for capturing, editing, and enhancing your photographs?
DH: Our favourite gear is the Fujifilm Xpro2, Fujifilm XT2, Fujinon 16mm 1.4 and Fujinon 23mm 1.4. Why those? Because we love to get close to our subject... to "smell" our images when we click those shutters.
Our favourite editing tool is Forged FXS, especially 03 for Lightroom Classic. We love the calm and rich tone and contrast it gives to our images.
TC: What is your greatest piece of advice for emerging photographers?
DH: There is an old proverb that says: "The shark that does not swim, drowns...". So our advice is: Never stop believing, never stop creating, never stop experiencing, never stop being happy and letting others be happy. Don’t stop!
